It may be helpful to look for white or yellow patches on your tonsils if you have chronic foul breath.
Stones (or tonsilloliths) may form in the tonsils when pieces of food, germs, or minerals (like calcium) get trapped in their crevices. The structure of these stones or lumps resembles that of cheese.
Very few symptoms are caused by these stones, with the exception of foul breath and sometimes throat pain.

There is some evidence that tonsil stones may go away on their own, but overall, research suggests that 10% of the population will have them.
Tonsil stones may also cause other symptoms, such as:
Inflammation of the throat or trouble swallowing
Distaste for metallic flavors
Fluffy tonsils
Hearing loss or pressure
Continuous hacking sound
Diseases of the tonsils

There is no need for specialized testing to establish the diagnosis of tonsil stones since they are readily apparent. They may sometimes be found by chance during a patient’s X-ray or scans for unrelated causes.
